Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz is regarded as one of the music industry’s most recognisable and valued musicians of his time, as he effortlessly proved at the O2 Academy in Glasgow on Thursday night as part of his 20th anniversary Let Love Rule tour.
Kravitz entered the stage wearing a leather kilt much to the crowd’s approval, complete with a sporran. Performing for over two hours, Kravitz and his band managed to rock out some old tunes and hits with every ounce of energy put into the performance.
Lenny has a special captivating presence on-stage, shown clearly through his effortless musical ability and flair. His ‘retro’ musical style makes him a unique artist in his own right.
His music comprises of a wide range of genres - from soulful ballads to epic rock anthems – nothing was left out of this performance. For the main part of the gig, Kravitz concentrated on songs from the LLR album, with highlights such as Freedom Train, My Precious Love and the soulful It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over. Although Kravitz’ lyrics are fairly simple and have not been regarded as his strong point, his musical ability and catchy hooks complement the simplicity of his words, which drew the Glasgow crowd into his performance with bittersweet tales of love, loss and life.
The chanting of the crowd during Let Love Rule created a feeling of unity within the venue, with Kravitz thanking the crowd for attending the gig in these ‘tough times’, thus adding something extra to the purpose of his performance. It was as if the title track was a way for Kravitz to remind the crowd the importance of music and its impact on bringing people together.
Towards the end of the gig, a few of the more recognisable hits were performed, including the epic hit Fly Away, American Woman, the funky anthem Always On The Run, and finally ending on Are You Gonna Go My Way? The night comprised of an eclectic mixture of Kravitz’ well-known and lesser known songs, each completely unique in terms of musical style.
