Sugar Crisis Interview
Welcome to whatsurmusic.com.
How did Sugar Crisis come together?
Lorna. We met at university and started going out, then a few years after that we started a band.
Neil. At the time we both just wanted to play in a band but then we thought we might as well just start one.
L. Yeah and we discovered the sings we wrote together were much better than the songs we wrote individually so it worked out nicely!
Does the fact that you are a couple lead to any arguments?
L. Sometimes! I think it helps the songs though. The songs end up better because we fight about them and we work really hard on the lines. We don’t let any bad lines into the songs.
Do you think it makes it easier or harder to be honest with each other about what you think is good and bad?
N. Easier.
L. I think it helps having someone to bounce your ideas off.
So how long have you been together as a band?
L. Really just about a year.
And within that year you managed to get signed?
L. Yeah it was just at the end of last year.
That’s great for a new band! I’m sure many people will be wondering how you got signed and what advice you might have for them?
N. Luck!
L. So many people ask us that and it baffles me every day! One record company was interested and they signed us up!
Did you approach them?
L. Well it was Weekender Records and they heard about us through a Japanese fan that is friendly with the head of the record company. So he came along to one of our gigs in Glasgow and he really liked it. We signed a singles deal with them last year.
So any advice for other bands then?
L. Just write lots and lots of songs, as many as you can, because I’m sure I wrote lots of really lots of rubbish ones at the beginning!
N. Have a look at all the bands and music around and try to make something different.
What instruments do you both play?
L. Neil plays the keyboard and I play the guitar.
Do you both sing?
N. Yeah but I am more of an assistant singer!
So your first single is “We Are Here To Save You” and is out now! What are you hoping for it?
L. That some people buy it!
I also notice there are two videos for it. Any particular reason to make two?
N. Because my brother is an animator and he had designed our logo which is two wee people and when the record label saw it they said can he make a video with them so he did but then we thought we want a live one as well.
L. We thought people might want to know what we looked like.
Was it fun to make your first video?
L. Yeah it was great we got to act silly and get dressed up running around the park fighting a robot!
What are your hopes for the rest of the year and for Sugar Crisis?
L. Hopefully that people like the music and we get to make an album.
N. To play more gigs. Maybe even some festivals in the summer.
Do you have anything lined up?
N. We are playing at Latitude festival in July and we’re going on a highland tour supporting Party Horse so that should fun.

Sugar Crisis are an unlikely find in Glasgow of late. From a city that breeds a host of talented singer/songwiters and a milliard of Indie bands it is hard to imagine where Sugar Crisis emerged from. They are surprisingly a Glaswegian pop duo that have been quickly snapped up by Weekender Records and released their debut single “We Are Here To Save You” , this week. However, don’t let the word pop frighten you if you are the sort of person anti all commercialism, including Simon Cowell and all his works, because Sugar Crisis give you all the fun you want from a pop band whilst avoiding all the manufacturing you don’t; playing their own instruments and writing their own songs. Still not convinced?? Read the interview with Neil and Lorna aka Suagar Crisis and maybe it’ll change your mind!
