Red lights drown the stage in the Captains Rest giving it a feel of a European underground boudoir. A bearded, bandanna wearing figure is swaying behind the drum kit, tightening up his cymbal. His slighter sidekick fiddles with a block of organs and synths. The anxious calm in the room is jostled by bodies moving around oblivious to the two Dutch men on the erotic stage setting. The Drummer, finished with his kit building, pauses to curl his arms above his head, letting the crowd behold his biceps to eager applause. A sonic wave rips out from the wall of keys. Drums kick off. Bye bye calm anxiety.
zZz first came to my attention through a design article highlighting how the excellent video concept for their track 'Grip' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfmJ6m97HqQ) was soon plundered by a well known Car company for commercial gain(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgOWu3mEHn8). OK. I'll turn a blind eye to any brown envelope marked 'SELL OUT' that may have been handed to zZz for this as bringing their great sound to my attention was for the greater good I reckon. The remarkable concept of the video was matched by the track. An infectious reverbed disco stomp that had me mumbling my own version of the chorus line (still don't know what he says).
So here I was. Watching Bjorn (drums, vocals) and Daan (keys, bleepy sonic things) bathed in red light, firing out a chewy cake of machine gun drum beats, sonic washes, tinkling bass with wonky crooning layering the top. Tracks such as 'Lover', 'Grip' and 'Running with the beast' and relentless disco rock that require convulsive dance. Other grooves like 'Loverboy' requires some uptempo electric shuffling and light smiles to Bjorn's high pitched lounge singing. Think Butthole Surfers with shiny disco balls. zZz offer varied rhythms but all demand your body to move.
So by the time Daan is straddling the keyboard and Bjorn is howling animal noises and kicking his kit around as they wind the whole set down into anarchy, I'm able to recompose. Sweat. Red Lights. Two Dutch Guys. It brought back some memories. Awesome stuff.
