Viatrophy Interview
Viatrophy Interview
Viatrophy are a new UK Death Metal band currently doing shows all over the country. We managed to speak to the drummer Craig Reynolds, before they set off, to find out a bit more about them.
Tell us a bit about the band?
We are a death metal band primarily, I guess you could call us, but it’s not as scary as it sounds! We’ve got other elements to our music; an ambient side which is more sort of in line with bands like Isis. Then we mix that with disgusting, ridiculous, heavy metal and try to make it work!
So who started Viatrophy?
Adam and G started the band in 2005 when they were really young and its just evolved from that. I think they started off playing Lamb of God covers and then finally learnt to play their instruments. Adams instrument is his voice though so I suppose he doesn’t count.
So as a band who are your main influences?
Band wise it is super diverse. Musically it probably goes from Decapitated, really technical metal, right down to Bjork because everyone brings their own influence. JJ really likes his dark metal and then Gurneet likes his music atmospheric like Sigur Ros. So there is a massive range of influences.
Who inspired you to pick up the drums?
There was no inspirational actually. I was 10 or 11 and someone came into school while we were doing instrument lessons and said who wants to do it. I thought yeah I can do that. I instantly thought to play the drums because they were cool and it went from there. It’s gone from wanting to be cool to pushing it too far that I don’t have a life and now can’t be cool!
So what’s been the highlight of 2009 so far?
Our self titled album, Viatrophy, has just came out on June 15th, which has been a massive thing for us because we spent two years writing it and then we have the Dominatour coming up which is at the end of this month. We are mega excited about it because it’s a month long tour with our buddies Annotations Of An Autopsy and Trigger the Bloodshed and we are on a bus for that. That’s quite a new thing for us being on a big bus. It’s going to be pretty fun and chaotic. A 30 day party I like to think of it as.
That is a good way to think about it!
So are there any big bands you would love to tour beside?
Slipknot. Hands down. They would be the number one band any of us would love to tour with because they are as big as it gets.
Viatrophy bring Dominatour to the Cathouse in Glasgow on August 10th.
You can also buy their debut album Viatrophy now!
